University of Ibadan or UI as it is fondly called is the oldest University in Nigeria as well as a highly rated university, not just in Nigeria but in Africa.
It was founded in November 1948 and is located in Ibadan, Western Nigeria. The first Chancellor of this great citadel of learning was Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa while Kenneth Dike was the first Vice-Chancellor who was named after the library of the school.
Over the years, UI has made steady progress in academics, research, rankings, structures, and training and retraining of staff.
Also, being the first recognized university to be ever founded in Nigeria, the University of Ibadan has produced some of Nigeria’s finest writers, soldiers, poets, academicians, pastors, politicians, lawyers, and so on.
The faculties in the University of Ibadan include Technology, Medicine, Law, Education, Pharmacy, Public Health and Dentistry, Social Studies, Science, Agriculture and Forestry, Veterinary, and Arts. Prof. Kayode Oyebode Adebowale is the current Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan.
UI Accreditation Status
As the foremost university in Nigeria, the school was long approved by Federal Government in 1948 and all the programs run in the university has full accreditation by the National Universities Commission which is an FG Commission mandated with the responsibility of accrediting schools and courses they offer after they have met a particular standard.

UI Hotels And Fees
At University of Ibadan, hostel and fees are not fixed. Because the University is a Federal University in Nigeria, their fees are amongst the cheapest in Nigeria.

UI Ranking
University of Ibadan always comes first when ranked amongst Universities in Nigeria and is often the only Nigerian university to make world ranking of universities.
This is because the school commands most Nigerian intellectuals and professionals who continuously embark on research to improve the course content of the school.
For example in July 2015, according to Journals Consortiums, the University of Ibadan was ranked 8th Best University in Africa after about 1,447 universities were compared by the Consortium.
UI Post UTME
Just like every other university in Nigeria, Post UTME is a compulsorily required of candidates before they are considered for admission to the University.
All candidates are required to sit for Post UTME after reaching the compulsory JAMB score of 200 (which is subject to change) and above. You can visit the University’s portal on www.ui.edu.ng for updates and guidelines on their Post UTME.
Candidates are expected to score 50% or above before they are considered for admission.
UI Post Graduate Courses
For all post graduate courses offered by the University refer to the School portal for more information. University of Ibadan offers Post Graduate Courses in Masters’ Degree (M.Sc.), and up to Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D).
UI Grading System
In keeping with the national standards for grading in universities, grading determines of students’ Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) determines the class of graduation of a student at the University of Ibadan. Grading system is done on a scale of 5 just like that of every other university in Nigeria. The rundown is as follows:
First Class Division: (100 – 70 with 5.00 – 4.50 CGPA)
Second Class Upper Division: (69 – 60 with 4.49 – 3.50 CGPA)
Second Class Lower Division: (49 – 45 with 3.49 – 2.40 CGPA)
Third Class Division: (49 – 45 with 2.39 – 1.50)
Please note that Pass Degree has been abolished by NUC in Nigeria since December 2012 for 2013/2014 academic session.
UI Admission Requirement
As you will rightly guess, the admission requirement of University of Ibadan is at least 5 Credits (including English and Mathematics) in one or at most 2 O’ level sittings.

Like I pointed out earlier, all candidates must score at least 200 and above in JAMB (though this score is subject to change depending on student population and JAMB guidelines).
Furthermore, to gain admission into University of Ibadan, all candidates must score 50 or above in the post UTME test whose dates are announced by University authorities.
UI Duration Of Studies
In line with the national education of 6-3-3-4 in Nigeria, undergraduates spend at least 4 years doing a program in University of Ibadan.
Basically, all other courses offered at University of Ibadan follow this schedule, but there are variations in courses like Engineering (which requires 5 years), and Medicine and Surgery (6/7).
UI Transcripts
As part of continued efforts to serve graduates of the University better, the University has designed an electronic platform where people can place order of transcript through ETX-NG Network.
This enables all ordered transcripts to be sent electronically to the schools were they are needed. This way graduates don’t have to visit the school and join a long queue of people asking for transcripts.
