University of Ilorin (also called UNILORIN) was established by the decree of then Federal Government of Nigeria in 1975 to be sited in Ilorin, Kwara State in present North Central Nigeria with a landmass of over 75,000 hectare.
On 25th October, 2015 proper academic work started started at just 200 students but presently has over 35,000 students. It is on records that the University also started with just 3 faculties which were Arts, Science and Education.
Noteworthy is the fact that the school started as an offshoot of University College in Ibadan but later gained full autonomy in October, 1977.
Despite the fact that the University started with 3 faculties, it can now boast of 15 faculties which include Arts, Agriculture, Environmental Sciences, Management Sciences, Health Sciences (with 2 faculties: Basic Medical and Clinical Sciences), Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Social Science, Education, Communication and Information Science, Engineering and Technology, Veterinary Medicine and Law. Other units include two institutes: (Institute of Education and Unilorin Sugar Research Institute) as well as Postgraduate School.
University of Ilorin was one of the 7 universities announced by then Military Federal Government of Nigeria was one of those that would be established in 1975 after it was being run as a campus of University of Ibadan.
The University has over 60 departments. Just like every other Nigerian university, it is headed by a Chancellor, HRH Alhaji Abdulmumin Kabir Usman, Emir of Katsina, but the day-to-day activity is overseen by a Vice Chancellor, Professor Abdul Ganiyu Ambali.
The motto of the University is Probitas Doctrina. School calendar is determined by the senate which makes major decisions in the school. The student union consists of 3 arms – Central Executive Council (CEC), Students’ Representative Council (SRC) and the Judicial Council.
UNILORIN Accreditation Status
The University is fully accredited by Nigeria’s National University Commission (NUC) which is the Commission saddled with such responsibility. Also, as part of the commitment to ensure that universities accredited by the Commission maintain the standard set by NUC, a team of NUC officials visited the University in January, 2015.
They team was impressed by what was on ground after visiting faculties like Physical Science, Agriculture, Law amongst others.
They commended the school for their giant stride, but tasked the University authorities to continue to improve the facilities they have in Engineering faulty.

Accommodation still remains a major challenge facing students of the University. This is because accommodations provided for the students by school authorities are barely enough for high number of candidates seeking admission into the school as well as the returning students.

UNILORIN Ranking
University of Ilorin has fared relatively well in recent rankings of both Nigerian and African universities.
For example, according to figures on Top 114 Universities in Nigeria released by Web Ranking (Webometric) and published on the official website of the University, UNILORIN took 6th position.
This is commendable considering that the University was also compared with both first set of Nigerian universities, private universities, the 6 universities it was established alongside, and other Nigerian universities that came afterwards.
UNILORIN Postgraduate Courses
The Post Graduate School of the University is responsible for Post Graduate Board chaired by The Dean of Post Graduate School.
Unilorin offers Post Graduate Courses in Graduate Diploma, Masters’ Degree (M.Sc.), and up to Doctor of Philosophy or Doctorate Degree (Ph.D).
To be qualified to do Master’s degree in the University, interested candidates will be given exam to write and the application form costs N25,000 (and this is subject to change).
Also, the University accepts a Second Class Lower Division for Master’s degree and candidates are expected to have a minimum of 5 Credits in O’ level subjects including English.
Furthermore, for those who wish to do PHD in the school, they are expected to have scored 55 and 59.99% in their Master’s degree programme.

UNILORIN Grading System
At Unilorin, Grading System is done on a scale of 5 just like that of every other university in Nigeria. The rundown is shown below:
First Class Division: (100 – 70 with 5.00 – 4.50 CGPA)
Second Class Upper Division: (69 – 60 with 4.49 – 3.50 CGPA)
Second Class Lower Division: (49 – 45 with 3.49 – 2.40 CGPA)
Third Class Division: (49 – 45 with 2.39 – 1.50)
These grades are important as they determine the Class of Graduation of Unilorin students.
UNILORIN Admission Requirement
Admission requirement of UNILORIN intended candidates is at least 5 Credits (including English) in NOT more than two sittings from O’ Level – SSCE/GCE/NECO and other equivalents.
Even though this condition is the basic requirement for all departments, other rules may apply as in many various departments of the University depending on the course of study.
All candidates MUST score 180 – 220 in UTME (depending on the course of choice). The cut-off score required to gain admission to study the course of your choice at University of Ilorin various from faculty to faculty.
All prospective candidates must apply for Post UTME visit their portal.
Direct Entry candidates must have at least 5 Credit passes in their O’ Level subjects (including English) and other subjects relevant to their course of study.
They must meet all UME requirements before they are considered for admission to the University.
Remedial Arts programmes which enable students to gain admission into the University from 100L are also expected to have the basic subject qualifications before their enrollment into the programme is considered.

UNILORIN Duration Of Studies
University of Ilorin uses the standard of 6-3-3-4 system of education in Nigeria, which means undergraduates spend at least 4 years doing a program in the University.
This means undergraduates (except Direct Entry candidates) spend a minimum of 4 years in school. Also, all other courses offered at University of Nigeria follow this schedule of 4 years (where a student does not have an extra semester), but there are variations in courses like Law, Engineering (which requires 5 years), and Medicine and Surgery (6/7 depending on school calendar and postings).
UNILORIN Transcripts
In furtherance with efforts to serve alumni of the University better, University of Ilorin has designed an electronic platform where they can place order for transcripts through their portal on transcript.unilorin.edu.ng and carefully follow the instructions on the page.
This method of requesting for transcript is known as e-Transcript application and it makes it convenient for alumni of the school to apply for transcripts online without being physically present in the school.
All payments are made via the portal and as a first timer on the portal, you are expected to create an account by clicking on Sign Up which automatically pops up a webform for your registration.
Ensure that the information given is accurate and error free. After filling out the field accurate, click on Sign Up to get registered and later use your Matriculation Number to login on a second visit.
